Italy recorded a trade deficit of EUR 264 million in January of 2025, swinging from the surplus of EUR 2.485 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year and contrasting sharply with market expectations of EUR 5.15 billion to mark the first deficit in two years, due to a surge in imports. Purchases of goods from foreign countries soared by 8.8% annually to EUR 48.983 billion with a surge in import of natural gas (24% to EUR 2.142 billion) as the halt of gas flows from Russia through Ukraine drove multiple European countries to scrap for alternative supplies with higher prices elsewhere. Imports were also sharply higher for machinery and equipment (14.3% to EUR 3.277 billion), metals (13.5% to EUR 5.475 billion), and chemicals (20% to EUR 4.863 billion). Exports rose by a softer 2.5% to EUR 48.719 billion as a decline for machinery (-3.1% to EUR 6.877 billion) offset a rise for pharmaceutical goods (33.6% to EUR 5.154 billion).
