Private businesses in the US added 155K workers to their payrolls in March 2025, following an upwardly revised 84K in February and above expectations of 105K. The services sector added 132K jobs, namely professional/business services (57K), financial activities (38K), leisure/hospitality (17K), education/health services (12K), and information (3K) while trade/transportation/utilities shed 6K jobs. The goods producing sector added 24K jobs, led by manufacturing (21K) ad construction (6K) while natural resources/mining lost 3K jobs. Meanwhile, year-over-year pay gains slowed to 4.6% for job-stayers and to 6.5% for job-changers. Thev pay premium for job-changers was 1.9 percentage points, matching a series low last seen in September. "Despite policy uncertainty and downbeat consumers, the bottom line is this: The March topline number was a good one for the economy and employers of all sizes, if not necessarily all sectors", according to Nela Richardson, Chief Economist, ADP.
