Romania’s trade deficit widened to EUR 2.74 billion in January 2025 from EUR 1.98 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. Exports rose by 2.4% year-on-year to EUR 7.25 billion, driven by strong growth in sales to non-EU countries (16.3%). However, sales to EU countries (-2.4%) decreased. Among product groups, sales increased the most for mineral fuels, lubricants and related
materials (60.5%) and beverages and tobacco (58.1%). Meanwhile, imports soared by 10.3% from a year earlier to EUR 9.99 billion, primarily attributed to significant growth in purchases from the non-EU countries (27.1%) and, to a lesser extent, from the EU (4.2%). Purchases rose sharply for beverages and tobacco (34.5%), followed by mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (30.6%), and manufactured goods classified mainly by raw materials (17.6%).
