Retail sales in Canada are expected to fall by 0.4% from the previous month in February of 2025, according to preliminary estimates. That is due to follow a 0.6% decline in January to C$69.4 billion, revised earlier from the preliminary estimate of a 0.4% decline, and thus marking back-to-back declines in retail sales for the first time since June 2024. Retail turnover was sharply lower in motor vehicles and parts dealers (-2.6% to C$19.3 billion) due to an aggressive decline in new car dealers (-3.2% to C$15.3 billion), food and beverage retailers (-2.5% to C$12.9 billion), and sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, books, and miscellaneous dealers (-2.2% to C$3.8 billion). On the other hand, turnover were higher in gasoline stations (3.2% to C$6.7 billion) and general merchandise retailers (0.9% to C$9.4 billion). From the previous year, turnover was 4.2% higher.
