The Consumer Price Index in New Zealand advanced by 0.5% in the three months to December 2024 over the previous quarter following a 0.6% rise in the September quarter. Main upward pressure came from: miscellaneous goods and services (1.0% vs 0.8% in Q3); recreation and culture (2.1% vs 0.7%), while prices rebounded for transport (1.5% vs -2.1%); education (0% vs -7.6%) and communication (1.9 vs -0.5%). In contrast, prices fell for food (-0.5% vs 1.3%); housing and household utilities (0.5% vs 1.9%), health (-0.2% vs 4.2%); and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.1% vs 0.6%). On an annual basis, prices jumped by 2.2% in the December quarter, following a 2.2% increase in the previous period.
