Slovakia posted a trade deficit of EUR 393.5 million in January 2025, shifting from a surplus of EUR 520.9 million and defying market expectations of a EUR 264 million surplus. Imports soared by 12.8% year-on-year to EUR 8,989.5 million, with eight out of ten sections increasing, particularly machinery and transport equipment (16.5%). Meanwhile, exports rose at a much slower rate of 1.2% to EUR 8,595.9 million, as the increase in sales of electricity and petroleum products (28.3%) was offset by a decrease in sales of manufactured goods (-8%) and sales of machinery and transport equipment, which remained broadly unchanged. The share of EU member states was nearly 79% in exports and approximately 61% in imports.
