Capacity utilization in the US rose sharply to 77.6% in December of 2024, the highest since August, to rebound from the downwardly revised 77% recorded in the two prior months, which were the lowest since May 2020. Capacity utilization for manufacturing, which makes up for most of the US industrial production, rose to 76.6% from 76.2%, lagging that of mining (90.8% vs 89.2% in November) but remaining well ahead of that for utility providers (71.1% vs 69.8%). Despite the increase, aggregate capacity utilization for industrial producers remained below the long-run average of 79.7%.
