The annual urban inflation rate in Egypt further eased to 25.7% in July 2024 from a seventeen-month low of 27.5% in the previous month, albeit remaining significantly above the upper limit of the central bank's range of 5-9%. Still, this marked the lowest reading since December 2022, with expectations that the easing of inflation will persist, even with the implementation of new subsidy cuts. Prices slowed down for food & non-alcoholic beverages (29.7% vs 39.1% in June), housing & utilities (9.8% vs 9.9%), alcoholic beverages & tobacco (47.9% vs 57.7%), household equipment & routine maintenance of the house (26% vs 26.1%), recreation & culture (45.3% vs 54.5%), and restaurants & hotels (34% vs 34.7%). Conversely, prices accelerated for clothing & footwear (27.2% vs 26.4%) and transport (17.9% vs 17.5%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.4% in July, easing from a 1.6% in the previous month.
