The annual inflation rate in the Philippines stood at 2.9% in January 2025, unchanged from the previous month and surpassing market expectations of 2.7%. This marked the highest reading since August, driven by price increases in food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.6% vs 3.1% in December) and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.6% vs 3.2%). Conversely, inflation slowed for housing utilities (2.2% vs 2.9%), education (4.8% vs 5%), and restaurants and accommodation services (3.8% vs 4.3%). At the same time, costs remained steady for health (at 2.6%), information and communication (at 0.3%), and recreation, sport, and culture (at 2.8%). Meanwhile, core inflation, which excludes selected food and energy items, eased to 2.6% from 2.8% in the preceding month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.5% in January, following a 0.6% gain in the prior period.
