New orders for US manufactured goods increased by 1.7% month-over-month in January 2025, following two consecutive months of declines and slightly surpassing market expectations of a 1.6% rise. Demand for transportation equipment surged by 9.9% (compared to a 5.5% decline in December), driven by a remarkable 93.9% jump in orders for civilian aircraft. Additionally, orders for defense aircraft rose by 1.9%, while orders for vehicles and parts, as well as ships and boats, saw declines of 1.5% and 11.0%, respectively. Demand was also up for computers and electronic products (1.8% vs 0.4%) and primary metals (1.4% vs -0.6%).
